It was my long time wish to visit Kerala. Finally this happened in the form of this trip to Wayanad. So get ready to experience the magic called “God’s own country”.
23rd July, Friday 2010
The route: Basaveshwaranagar – Kamakshipalya – Outer Ring Road – Kengeri Satellite Town – Ramanagaram – Channapatna – Maddur – Mandya – Srirangapatna – Mysore.
We started at 6:15 am and were in Mysore by 8:45 am. The ride was like a breeze with speed sometimes touching 110 kmph on straight stretches. Had our breakfast at Vishnu Bhavan, and hit the road again. Our destination was Kalpetta, the district headquarters in Wayanad District.
The route: Mysore – Nanjangud – Gundlupet – Muthanga Wild Life Scantuary – Sulthan Bathery – Kalpetta. At Gundlupet, we took a right turn towards Sulthan Bathery. The ride was colourful with fields having orange coloured Marigold flowers on either side of the road. After crossing the Karnataka side of the checkpost, we visited Sreerama temple at Ponkuzhi, just before the Muthanga WLS. Since it was already 12:15pm, and, the safari timings for the WLS was from 9:00 am to 11:00 am for the morning session, and 3:00pm to 5:00 pm for the afternoon session, we skipped it and went to Kalpetta to check-in at Hotel Haritagiri, where we had made an online reservation in advance.
After refreshing ourselves, we had lunch and started towards Pookot Lake via Old Vythri, based on the information given by Haritagiri’s travel desk. It was drizzling on the way, which stopped once we were at Pookot Lake. We went for boating in the lake, in a pedal boat and it was a good experience, in that we were in control of the boat, what with only two of us were entirely pedalling and also in control of the rudder. We also saw a few fishes in an aquarium at the lake resort. Also there was a small room with different types of mirrors. In some of them, one can see oneself as a dwarf, as a giant etc at which we couldn’t stop ourselves from laughing at our images. In one of them your image will be suspended from the ceiling. It was quite interesting to look at those images. We then reached back Haritagiri. My hubby went through a session of Ayurvedic massage and hot steam bath. I sat through for a session of Herbal Facial and Henna for the hair
